Formula / How It Works

Tax Amount = Pre-tax Price x (Tax Rate / 100). Total Price = Pre-tax Price + Tax Amount. Pre-tax Price = Total / (1 + Tax Rate / 100).

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate (as a decimal). For example, a $50 item with 8.25% sales tax: $50 x 0.0825 = $4.13 in tax. Total price: $50 + $4.13 = $54.13.
Divide the tax-inclusive total by (1 + tax rate as decimal). For example, if the total is $54.13 with 8.25% tax: $54.13 / 1.0825 = $50.00 pre-tax price.
Sales tax is added at the point of final sale to the consumer and is common in the US. VAT (Value Added Tax) is collected at each stage of production and distribution and is common in Europe and many other countries. The end consumer pays a similar amount, but the collection method differs.
No, five US states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, some localities in Alaska do impose local sales taxes. Rates in other states range from about 2.9% to 7.25% at the state level, with additional local taxes possible.
