Perfect Rhymes, Near Rhymes and Synonyms Explained

Type a word and this tool lists words that rhyme with it, words that nearly rhyme, synonyms, antonyms, words with a similar meaning and words that sound alike. For "time" it finds rhymes such as prime and sublime. Rhymes are grouped by syllable count, which helps when a line of a song or poem needs a set beat.

There are six modes. Rhymes gives perfect rhymes, where the end sounds match exactly, like happy and snappy. Near rhymes gives slant rhymes, such as happy and fancy, which songwriters use all the time. Synonyms and Antonyms come from a thesaurus. Similar meaning casts a wider net and can include related words that are not true synonyms. Sounds like finds words that are spelled differently but sound close, which is handy for puns. Tap any word to copy it, or copy the whole list at once.

The word lists come from the Datamuse API, a free word-finding service. Your browser sends only the word you type to Datamuse. Each search returns up to 100 words, best matches first, in English only. Rare words, names and new slang may bring back only a few results, or none.

A synonym is not always a safe swap, so check what a word means in the Dictionary before you use it. If a verse or a caption has to fit a limit, the Word Counter keeps track.

Frequently Asked Questions

A perfect rhyme matches every sound from the last stressed vowel to the end, like "time" and "prime". A near rhyme, also called a slant rhyme, only gets close, like "happy" and "fancy", where the vowel matches but the consonants differ. Near rhymes give you far more choices and are common in pop songs and rap.
Syllables set the rhythm of a line. If you need a two-beat word to rhyme with "happy", the 2 syllables group gives you snappy and scrappy, while "unhappy" sits in the 3 syllables group. Picking from the right group keeps the beat of your line without counting syllables yourself.
Many words have no clear opposite. Nouns like "table" or "river" have none, and some adjectives only have opposites made with a prefix, like "unhappy". The Antonyms mode only lists opposites found in the thesaurus data. Try Similar meaning and look for words with the opposite sense, or add a prefix such as un- or dis- yourself.
Not always. Synonyms share a core meaning but differ in tone and use. For "happy" the list includes "content" and "halcyon". Content is calm and everyday, while halcyon sounds poetic and usually describes a past time, as in "halcyon days". Read the sentence with the new word in it before you keep it.
