How the Grammar and Spell Checker Finds Errors

This grammar checker finds spelling mistakes, grammar errors, punctuation slips and style problems in your text. You can fix each one with a click. Paste up to 20,000 characters, pick a language or let the tool detect it, and press Check text.

Every problem is marked in your text and listed below it with a short note. The list sorts issues into four groups: spelling, grammar, punctuation and style. In "Their is a problem here", the checker flags "Their" and offers "There". Click a suggestion to swap it in, or click Ignore to drop the warning. When you are done, copy the fixed text with one button. If you change the text by hand, the marks go out of date, so press Check again.

The checking is done by LanguageTool, an open-source proofreading service. When you press the button, your browser sends the text and the language setting straight to LanguageTool's free public API. ToolsForThat never sees it. The free service allows 20 checks a minute and 20 KB of text per check, so a long document has to go in parts. Some extra checks are kept for paying LanguageTool users, and no checker can judge whether you said what you meant. Treat it as a second pair of eyes, not a final proofread.

Grammar checkers work from rules and word lists, so they catch patterns, not meaning. A real word in the wrong place, such as "form" instead of "from", often slips through because both words exist. The free LanguageTool service also runs fewer checks than its paid plan. For important text, read it aloud once after fixing the flagged issues.
A spelling error is a word that is not in the dictionary, like "exampel", or a mix-up of sound-alike words, like "their" and "there". A grammar error is when real words do not fit together, as in "This are" or "a apple". This tool counts "a" versus "an" mistakes as grammar.
Yes. Choose English (UK) in the Language menu, and "colour" is accepted while "color" is flagged as a spelling error. Detect automatically usually treats English as US English. If spelling matters, pick the variant you need: US, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or South Africa.
