How Bridge Days Turn Holidays Into Long Weekends

A long weekend is a break of three or more days in a row, made when a public holiday lands next to a Saturday or Sunday. This planner lists every long weekend for a country and year. It also finds bridge days, single workdays between a holiday and the weekend, where one day of leave gives you four or more days off. In the United States in 2026 there are 8 long weekends, and 2 bridge days add two 4-day breaks.

Here is how a bridge day works. New Year's Day 2026 falls on a Thursday. Take Friday, January 2 off and you are free from Thursday to Sunday, 4 days for 1 day of leave. The summary adds this up for the whole year. It shows how many long weekends need no leave at all, how many bridge days there are, and how many days off each one buys.

Past breaks are faded and the next one is marked, so you can plan ahead. Pick a region to include its own holidays, such as St Andrew's Day in Scotland. If you also get bank holidays off, switch them on. In Japan, for example, January 2 and 3 are bank holidays. Copy the plan as text to add it to a leave request. The weekend is always Saturday and Sunday, so the plan does not fit places with a Friday and Saturday weekend. The planner suggests single bridge days only, and the data can miss one-off holidays. Check your employer's holiday calendar before you book time off.

A bridge day is a workday between a public holiday and the weekend. If a holiday falls on a Thursday, Friday is the bridge day, and if it falls on a Tuesday, Monday is. Taking that one day off gives you 4 days in a row. In Germany these are called Brückentage, and they are popular days to book off.

Use your leave on bridge days first, since each one turns a single holiday into 4 days off. The planner shows how many days off each vacation day buys. In the US in 2026, taking January 2 and November 27 off costs 2 days of leave and gives you two 4-day breaks, 8 days off in all.

The planner counts full-day public holidays for the country, plus the region you pick. Bank holidays count only when you switch them on, and days your employer gives on its own are not known. The planner also assumes Saturday and Sunday are your weekend. If yours differs, check Public Holidays by Country and plan those days yourself.

It does when the country gives a substitute day off. July 4, 2026 is a Saturday, so the US day off is Friday, July 3, and the long weekend runs from July 3 to 5. In the UK, Boxing Day 2026 is a Saturday, so Monday, December 28 is off and Christmas becomes a 4-day break. Without that rule, the holiday adds no extra day.
