Moon Phases, Illumination and Full Moon Names

This moon phase calendar shows the date and time of every new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter. It covers any month from 1701 to 2100. It also shows the moon right now: its phase, how much of it is lit and its age in days. In 2026 the Harvest Moon is full on September 26 at 16:49 UTC, which is 12:49 PM in New York.

Times are shown in your device's time zone, and the zone is named under the pickers. That matters more than you might think. The phase times come from the US Naval Observatory, which publishes exact times for the four main phases. Your browser sends it only the year. Your device works out the current illumination and age. It uses a standard method from the book Astronomical Algorithms by Jean Meeus. On the day of a full moon it reads close to 100%, and at a quarter moon about 50%. Age is the time since the last new moon. A full cycle takes about 29.5 days.

The full moon list gives each one a traditional North American name, as listed by the Old Farmer's Almanac, such as Wolf Moon in January and Cold Moon in December. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox, and the Hunter's Moon comes next. A second full moon in one calendar month is a Blue Moon, and 2026 has one on May 31. Illumination is the share of the Moon's visible disk lit by the Sun. It is 0% at new moon, about 50% at first and last quarter and 100% at full moon. The quarter names refer to a quarter of the orbit, not the lit area. Between phases it changes by up to about 12 percentage points a day.
Moon age is the number of days since the last new moon. It runs from 0 to about 29.5 days, the length of one cycle of phases. An age of about 7.4 days means first quarter, about 14.8 days means full and about 22 days means last quarter. The exact values vary a little from month to month.
In popular use, a Blue Moon is the second full moon in one calendar month. It happens about every two to three years because the 29.5-day cycle is shorter than most months. 2026 has one: full moons on May 1 and May 31. The Moon does not look blue. The name is just a figure of speech.
