Frequency and wavelength are inversely related properties of waves. This converter lets you move between them instantly for electromagnetic waves (light, radio, microwave) and sound waves. Enter a frequency to find the wavelength, or enter a wavelength to find the frequency - the tool handles the conversion using the appropriate propagation speed.

For electromagnetic waves, the speed of light in a vacuum (approximately 299,792,458 m/s) is used by default. For sound waves, you can select the medium (air, water, steel, etc.) and temperature, as the speed of sound varies significantly with these factors. This makes the tool useful for everything from antenna design and RF engineering to acoustics and music.

The calculator covers a vast range of frequencies - from extremely low frequency (ELF) radio waves through microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, and beyond. Frequency and wavelength are inversely proportional, related by the wave speed: wavelength = speed / frequency, or equivalently, frequency = speed / wavelength. For electromagnetic waves in a vacuum, the speed is the speed of light (approximately 3 x 10^8 m/s). Higher frequency means shorter wavelength, and vice versa.
A common antenna length is one-quarter wavelength. First convert the frequency to wavelength using wavelength = c / frequency, where c is the speed of light. Then divide by 4 for a quarter-wave antenna. For example, a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal has a wavelength of about 12.5 cm, so a quarter-wave antenna would be about 3.1 cm.
The speed of sound in air increases with temperature because warmer air molecules move faster and transmit vibrations more quickly. At 20 degrees C, sound travels at about 343 m/s. At 0 degrees C, it drops to about 331 m/s. The approximate formula is v = 331.3 + 0.606 x T, where T is temperature in Celsius.
Visible light spans frequencies from approximately 430 THz (red, 700 nm wavelength) to 750 THz (violet, 400 nm wavelength). Below this range is infrared, and above it is ultraviolet. The visible spectrum represents only a tiny fraction of the full electromagnetic spectrum.
Common RF bands include AM radio (530-1700 kHz), FM radio (88-108 MHz), WiFi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Bluetooth (2.4 GHz), cellular 4G/5G (600 MHz to 39 GHz), GPS (1.575 GHz), and microwave ovens (2.45 GHz). Each frequency has different propagation characteristics suited to its application.
